Glen Abbey Golf Course News
Spring arrives at The Abbey after last year's Canadian Open Summer.
The 100th Canadian Open which began July 20, 2009 at the Glen Abbey Golf course concluded with Nathan Green emerging as the winner.
The course had originally been closed from July 13 in preparation for the event. The greens, roughs and fairways received a makeover for optimal conditions. The fairway cut was just under half an inch, avoiding any laying down grass that could slow the ball down. The rough was be groomed to about 4 inches and is hand raked so the grass will stand up. The weather seemed perfect right before the event with even the Valley holes being lush and green this year. Unfortunately, rain created several delays but play was concluded on the Monday with all holes played.
The Glen Abbey Golf Club is located at 1333 Dorval Drive in Oakville, Ontario
Padraig Harrington, winner of the past two Open championships, won his third consecutive victory in the Irish PGA Championship. Jim Furyk on the other hand did not play the Canadian Open this year. Players such as Greg Norman, 54, and Tom Watson, 59. Norman tied for third just behind Padraig Harrington last year at the championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Watson's last Open win was in 1983 but he is in good form this year. But their styles may not be in alignment to "air" courses such as Glen Abbey Golf Club that requires a good bit of flying over bunkers and high drives. This time around scores were low because of all of the moisture and strategy had to be altered to accommodate the start and stop nature of play and wet conditions.

The game play hole rotation was different this year at the Glen Abbey hosted Canadian Open 2009.
In order to save the players about 700-800 steps, they did not start on hole 1 but on hole 4 as follows: The par-4 fourth hole is first, the will then move on to the old holes five through nine, then move to the seventh hole, (formerly the third hole), and finish the eighth and ninth holes on what used to be the first and second holes. Holes 10 through 18 will remain the same. Note that for the competition, the 16th hole has been changed back to a par 5.
Tiger comes in 1 over par 71 at Turnberry. Despite low winds for optimal putting conditions, he admits to having made a few mistakes. This is the 6th time in 14 career opening rounds that he shot over par.
Ben Curtis who won the open in 2003, makes an impressive 5 under 65. 1 eagle, 5 birdies, 2 bogeys in the first round. 31 putts in first round.
A treat on Thursday July 23 right after the last putt was sunk ( 6:30pm) was Kevin Costner and Modern West. Yes, this is the actor Kevin Costner from the movies Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves and Robin Hood who is also a talented lead singer and guitarist for this country rock group.
The band released its debut album,Untold Truths
in November 2008. Costner fans flocked to see the Hollywood star perform on stage despite the rain.
